Bilingual vs international in Buenos Aires / Zona Norte
Practical guide for families choosing between a local bilingual school, an elite Anglo-Argentine IB school, and a Northern Hemisphere calendar international school. In Zona Norte the names sound similar; the calendar, fee currency, and student profile do not.
Three types (clear taxonomy)
1. Argentine bilingual (March–December calendar)
Argentine private schools with a heavy English load (and sometimes Cambridge / bilingual projects), but local school calendar, Argentine diploma, and a mostly local community. Typical examples on the northern corridor: Michael Ham, St. Luke’s, and many of the “St. …” schools in Greater Buenos Aires.
- Calendar: March–December (Argentine cycle).
- Language: Spanish + intensive English; day-to-day life remains Argentine.
- Who fits: local or medium/long-term resident family; children heading toward Argentine university entry; those who want a local social network.
2. International / Northern Hemisphere calendar (Lincoln, BAICA)
Schools designed for expatriates and continuity with the US/IB system. English as the main language of instruction; mid-year admission possible; fees in a USD logic. In Buenos Aires, the expat-family consensus usually narrows genuinely international NH-calendar options to Lincoln (La Lucila) and BAICA (San Fernando).
- Calendar: roughly August–June (Northern Hemisphere).
- Language: English first; Spanish as a second language / subject.
- Who fits: short or medium stay (3–5 years) with a next destination in the US/Europe/Asia; children already schooled in English; families who cannot (or do not want to) sync with the Mar–Dec cycle.
3. Elite bilingual with IB (Northlands, St. Andrew’s, etc.)
Anglo-Argentine tradition, uniforms, strong local networks, Argentine calendar, and often IB (PYP / Diploma) on top of the national diploma. They are not “international schools” in the expat sense: the community is predominantly high-income Argentine. Northlands (Olivos / Nordelta) and St. Andrew’s Scots School (Olivos / San Fernando) are the most cited references in Zona Norte.
- Calendar: March–December.
- Language: real bilingualism + IB pathway in several cases.
- Who fits: local or dual-track family (stay in AR or leave with IB); those who prioritize local prestige, sports, and an Argentine peer network.
> Quick rule: if your question is “Can I start in January and continue at a Miami school next year without losing a year?”, look first at Lincoln / BAICA. If your question is “I want the best local bilingual with IB and an Argentine network?”, look at Northlands / St. Andrew’s (and peers).

Costs: what is known (without inventing)
- Lincoln — capital fee in USD. Official Tuition & Fees confirms Capital Assessment U$S 12,000 (one-time, K5–grade 12; 50% refund if withdrawing in the first year). Monthly/annual tuition in USD: there is a table on the same page; we do not list amounts we have not verified in text — ask admissions for the current PDF/table.
- Northlands — published ARS bands. Primary and secondary 2026 on the Nordelta website (see table above and school page). Year in 11 installments Feb–Dec + scholarship fund.
- St. Andrew’s — ARS bands in 2026 circular. Letter/circular to families (Nov 2025) with March/April 2026; see school page.
- BAICA, Michael Ham, St. Luke’s. No comparable public table at the time of this guide → contact admissions.
Always add enrollment, cafeteria, transport, and extras. “Tuition” is almost never the full monthly cost.
Geography and commute (Olivos / San Isidro / Nordelta / La Lucila)
- La Lucila (Lincoln): riverside, Vicente López. Convenient if you live in VL / Olivos / Martínez / lower San Isidro. From Nordelta / Tigre it is a long peak-hour trip (Panamericana + Acceso Norte); many families still do it for the international profile.
- Olivos / San Isidro (St. Andrew’s, Michael Ham VL, Northlands Olivos): the historic bilingual “axis.” Ideal if you are already on the Libertador / Maipú corridor. From Nordelta: 35–60+ min depending on time of day.
- Nordelta (Northlands ND, Ham ND, St. Luke’s ND): makes sense if you live in or near Tigre / the islands. You avoid the daily commute to VL, in exchange for a shorter school offer.
- San Fernando (BAICA, SASS campus): reasonable from northern San Isidro, Victoria, southern Tigre; less natural from deep Pilar without a car.
Practical rule: prioritize 1–2 campuses within ≤40 min at your real drop-off time, not the brochure. A “perfect” school 70 minutes away usually loses to a “very good” one near home.
How to decide in one afternoon
- Set the horizon: how many years do you plan to stay in BA?
- Set the calendar: do you need NH for sure?
- Ask in writing: March fee (or NH semester), enrollment, extras, 2026 update policy.
- Visit one international and one bilingual/elite in the same month: the climate difference (uniform, language in the playground, passport mix) is felt in 20 minutes.
